People often ask me, “ Why lemon? What's so important about lemon when it comes to health and cleaning?”
First of all I smile just thinking about lemon. Lemon has a bright citrusy, sour but kind of Tangy flavor. If you are eating lemons, you have a lip-smacking experience that goes on. But there's something else happening in your body’s pH. You're helping to establish a better pH, which has a whole list of health benefits that we will cover another time. So let's talk about spring cleaning spring cleaning: where it came from and why women have focused on spring cleaning for years. Spring cleaning started many, many years ago, and was the only time people really cleaned. Nowadays, we work cleaning all winter long. But back then, everyone was hunkered down in a little house, and spring cleaning gave everyone an opportunity to get out their linens and really scrub down the walls and food splatters and heating soot, and everything else that had happened through the winter. It was a time to open the lungs and the doors and really air out the place.
Now we have a better opportunity to spring clean. We get the opportunity to spring clean inside ourselves and our outside environment at the same time. And that's why lemon is so unique. So, what exactly is lemon oil? It’s just like it sounds: it is the oil from the citrus rind around the outside of the lemon. We get that wonderful aroma and the amazing cleaning power of lemon, proven to get out of all the grit and the old layers of oils, waxes and cleaners that we may have put on to our surfaces. Lemon oil has been used for many, many years for cleaning, and is especially a favorite among furniture lovers.
This versatile, effective cleaner has many applications for not just spring cleaning, but general cleaning, such as putting it in your wash, cleaning sinks, removing stains and cleaning floors. Just yesterday I experienced the amazing cleaning power of lemon. In refinishing a dresser, I had splattered little spots of paint on a favorite sweater. I thought, I know that lemon oil can get out acrylic paint and that's basically what we put on our walls. So I stuck some lemon on a rag and rubbed it on a spot to make sure I didn't lose the color of the rest of my sweater. No problem.
Then I took some lemon oil and just started rubbing it into the paint spots. With a little bit of pushing it around I could see things were loosening up. I added some Doterra laundry detergent on top of it because it's an enzymatic response and pulls stains out as well. With the two of them, I rinsed with water and repeated until all the paint spots were gone! That's one of the things we can do with lemon that people don't talk about as far as cleaning is concerned.
