Melaleuca alternifolia oil, commonly known as tea tree oil, has been used for centuries for it's a specific health properties. It's a terpene, so it comes out of this tree's leaves, and it has shown the ability to help the body heal itself in many ways
My favorite story about tea tree oil is that a during World War 1 and World War II, in the Australian military it was carried in the medicine kits of each of the soldiers because of its antibiotic and antiseptic and antibacterial behavior. It was also useful in dealing with scrapes and cuts, blisters, fungal infections and other issues that you might deal with in a jungle situation. It has also been shown to keep away bugs, which is important in many combat settings.
In one short paragraph I've already named more than a dozen different ways tea tree oil can be used.
