Small Change and Lemon Oil

Something you probably don’t know about me is, I like pennies.

Finding a penny to me is special. It makes me think of when I was little and finding a penny meant a trip to the candy store for a piece of gum. It was a BIG deal, a celebration, a party. And I love a party.

Today, I went downstairs to do some laundry, and while picking up a load, saw something that kind of looked like a penny. I reached down to pick it up.

The lights were dim, so squinting my eyes, I started rubbing that little coin between my thumb and finger. I wondered what was the weird stuff attached like glue and peppered all over both sides of the coin was. And the edges were all torn apart like a saw had cut them off.

Suddenly, I had a flashback of my older brothers restoring old coins for their collections by putting them in vinegar to get off "stuff". I had this idea that maybe I could restore this penny to its former glory.

So I grabbed my little bottle of Lemon (it has saved me many times from acrylic paint mess to gummy label removal), sprinkled a few drops on the coin, and here’s what it looked like about halfway through the process.

Obviously the edges are still missing. Check out the nicer looking penny.

What kind of caustic acid, can actually eat holes around the edges on pennies??? This was what that was left. WHAT happened to that poor penny.

Crazy. I never would have guessed there’d be actual pock marks and missing pieces!

Just like pennies, I like people who have hearts ready, wanting and waiting to celebrate living. People who want to make a difference but haven't got the strength or health yet.

The funny thing is that a worn out penny trade in value is the same as the brand new one. And if it's in mint condition, it's worth a lot more. Have you ever felt like that worn out penny? I have.
